About the Photographers:
Gary and Ben are friends and co-workers in the IT staff of a small publishing company in Northern Virginia. They are also both amateur photographers.
Gary originally shot with a Konika-Minolta DiMAGE Z2, but changed to a Canon 20D in September of 2004. For lenses, he uses either the 18-55mm kit lens or a 75-300mm Sigma.
Ben uses a Nikon D70 with a 18-70mm Zoom-Nikkor Lens (the 'D70 Outfit') or a Quantaray 50mm macro lens. Prior to April 2004, he used a Fuji S602 Zoom Pro.
Both Gary and Ben use the excellent and Free/Open Source GIMP for their photo editing needs. Gary also uses Photoshop Elements.
Why 18%?
When we creating this site, we struggled to decide on a name. We couldn't come up with anything all that creative, but wanted something photo-related (duh). All the good stuff was already used, so we ended up with 18%, named after an 18% gray card used for exposure settings.
Originally, the site was gray to go along with our name, but we changed it when we decided that a white background complemented more of the photos better.
Copyright/Licensing:
All photographs on this site are licensed under a Creative Commons License and are copyrighted by their respective photographer.
Basically, the license says that you can take and use our images for any purpose, but if you modify/build upon them, you can only distribute the resulting work under this same license. We'd appreciate a mention as the original photographers, but it's not required. Read the linked license above for more information.
